2025 Industry Data

Or, jump right to the awards.

Dealers by Country

Which countries have the most hifi dealers? We've included boutique stores, big box chains, and theater installers that sell true hifi brands. (We're only looking at four countries in our data set.)

Number of dealers in each American state: California (61), Florida (47), New York (42), Michigan (42), Texas (36), Illinois (24), Arizona (23), Colorado (22), Ohio (20), New Jersey (19), Pennsylvania (17), Washington (17), North Carolina (15), Massachusetts (15), Indiana (14), Virginia (13), Oregon (13), Utah (11), Maryland (11), Connecticut (11), Georgia (11), Nevada (9), Wisconsin (8).

Brands by Country

Each bar shows how many hifi brands are headquartered in that country. Our readers were surprised to see Germany above the United Kingdom and Canada above Denmark.

Remaining brands per country (truncated): Netherlands (18), Austria (14), England (13), Taiwan (12), Singapore (10), Sweden (9), South Korea (8), Greece (8), Norway (7), Spain (6), Slovenia (6), Australia (6), New Zealand (5), Serbia (5), Hong Kong (4).

Products Released Yearly

This data shows the number of distinct  products released by our Top 250 brands per year. You can see how release volume has plateaued for the past three years. Meaning, product catalogues are no longer expanding.

Product Category Popularity

Across our Top 250 brands, here are the product counts in each hifi category. This shows that the industry releases far more speakers than amps, and far more amps than preamps.

Pricing Popularity

Here we take the Top 250 brands' products and distribute them across their price brackets to see which price points are most commonly marketed. For example, 3246 products are sold at an MSRP between $1 and $500.

Number of Used Products For Sale

This number encompasses both online hifi marketplaces plus offline dealers listing used items on their website. Includes USA, UK, Australia, and Canada.

25,000+
65%

Discount On Used Products

Across all hifi brands , used inventory has a median discount of 65% from MSRP. On average, however, newer products have smaller discounts; older products have much larger discounts.

2025 Headphone Winners

Welcome to the ExtremeHiFi Awards. We spent nearly one year collecting data in pursuit of awarding brands based on real-world performance—not strictly based on our editors' opinions (although there's some of that too!). This means our awards are data-driven. While no awards process is entirely neutral, we do not run advertising on ExtremeHiFi. Therefore, we have limited relationships with brands. As a result, we believe these awards truly mean something, and brands should be proud of the impact they've had—as seen in the real-world data. (Click the tabs above for a tiny peek at the data. )

High end headphones are often impressive pieces of engineering, with a primary focus on the sound and technology itself. But with that focus, often manufacturers end up almost entirely forgetting the ergonomics, and the fact that luxury headphones can themselves be art. Meze is not one of those manufacturers, producing some of the most visually stunning, comfortable and truly excellently designed models available today on top of their great sound. They stand out above all others and deserve special recognition for the beauty and competence of their physical and industrial design, providing a true "luxury" experience that hardly anyone else can match.

Commentary

The Raal SR1b provides an extraordinarily different listening experience from any other headphone. Its free-field design not only allows an entirely open and natural listening experience, but it does so with a tuning that is subjectively and objectively close to the way our ears naturally perceive sounds in the real world. Its limited bass output might mean it needs assistance with more pop and electronic focused music, but for classical, few headphones provide quite as engaging a listen as these.

The Truthear pure delivers a simply exceptional tuning and technical performance at a fraction of the price of most real competitors. With this IEM making many others at even five times its price feel rather irrelevant, this is a product that offers an accessible gateway to true high end sound.

Hifiman's new HE600 feels like the closest to a spiritual successor to the beloved HE6 that we have seen yet. Delivering a dynamic and engaging low-end, with a midrange and treble response that keeps Hifiman's signature expansive soundstage and top notch detail, but with a more full bodied presentation than previous designs, this is a headphone that had me listening long past finishing the review evaluation itself.

Commentary

Fiio's FT1 shows that you don't need to break the bank to get exceptional sound. With a tuning that stays close to neutral with a uniquely even and well behaved treble response, plus a slight elevation in the bass to add punch and engagement without detracting from detail, this is a no-brainer recommendation for just about anyone.

Ryan at Modhouse has achieved something truly special with the Tungsten. Keeping a fine balance between neutrality and retaining some of the slight colourations audiophiles love, this headphone is a true endgame product at a not so endgame price. The only reason one might need to look elsewhere is that the tungsten is among the hardest headphones on the market to drive, but if you have the source gear to run it, the Tungsten comfortably holds its own against industry favourites such as the Hifiman Susvara.

Commentary

The Susvara has developed a stellar reputation over its lifetime, far outlasting many others that have seen a rise and fall in popularity. A reputation which is most certainly well deserved. Few headphones are able to deliver such a detailed, yet neutral and transparent presentation as the Susvara can. Regardless of what other headphones have come across my desk for review or that I have purchased to keep, the Susvara still remains my go-to benchmark.

My experience with Caldera Closed had me smiling constantly, again and again saying "just one more track"....Hard hitting low-end, rich, vivid and emotionally engaging midrange with a focus on vocal presence. Combined with incisive and spacious treble. ZMF's Caldera Closed is one that quite convincingly shows that 'true neutral' is often simply not as smile-inducing as a tastefully curated design such as this.

The Subtonic Storm is an exceptional IEM that defies all expectations of how an IEM can sound. A deep reaching and authoritative subbass response that blows any thoughts of "BA Bass" out of the water. Near unmatched detail retrieval and natural, engaging timbre for vocals and instruments. But the real magic trick of this IEM is the soundstage. The realism and expansiveness of the soundstage offered

Dan Clark Audio's patented Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System is a highly novel approach to passive acoustic filtering, with proven results in both DCA's open and closed back models.

It delivers not only excellent tuning but vanishingly low distortion. DCA's Stealth adheres to the Harman target with greater precision than almost any other product on the market.

The effectiveness of this technology in not just one, but many models of headphones, makes DCA this year's clear headfi winner. A real breakthrough.

Premium Speakers
Commentary

MBL has been around for decades yet no one has matched their speakers' sonic novelty. Through their omnidirectional drivers, these speakers couple to your room to create an unparalleled "the musicians are in the room with you" experience.

They also project a soundstage so forward and so wide so that the music surrounds you—even with limited room treatment. But if you really want your jaw to drop, listen to these with skyline diffusion on the ceiling. Your ceiling will disappear and you'll feel like you're seated in the front row of a concert with musicians playing as large as life.

The decision to buy these or the Magico M7s comes down to listener preference—which sonic attributes you prefer. Find dealers and listen back-to-back. We commend Elite Audio in California, 3mA in Texas, and Suncoast Audio in Florida.

MagicoM7
Commentary

We listened to the M7s at the Magico factory. What we heard was the best bass articulation we've ever experienced. Clean, tight, layered—and deeply viscerally satisfying in ways you didn't know was possible.

The speakers also disappear better than anything we've heard. What we mean by that is not simply that there's a strong phantom center image, but that you have no idea where the speakers are in the room when your eyes are closed.

Ultimately, the Magico M7's endgame bass plus endgame disappearing act gets you the most impressively engineered speakers we've ever heard. Not clinical, just perfect.

MSB Cascade's Bit Diffusion Technology—a software/hardware algorithm that debuted in MSB's top-of-the-line Cascade DAC—makes digital sound like analog. It does so to an extent we haven't heard before.

What's more, it also improves your speakers' bass output with a better grip and articulation that we didn't realize could be affected so noticeably by a DAC.

In blind tests, listeners cannot tell they're listening to digital (as opposed to vinyl). The biggest takeaway? Smooth, grain-free listening. An absence of treble harshness. Yet not an ounce of detail is lost. You can especially hear this in vocals.

Every dealer and reviewer we spoke to who's heard the Cascade has said there is no better DAC in the world at its price point.

Their success is a reflection of great at-home trial performance among reviewers, which compels them to share their findings with their viewers and readers.

The Arendals are notable for their groundbreaking price-to-performance—in part thanks to their large size, superb dynamics, bass punch, and overall clarity.

They rival speakers four times their cost while offering something that more expensive speakers virtually never do: generous in-home trial periods to ensure their speakers are truly right for you.

dCS
Commentary

After talking to a many hifi dealers, dCS was conclusively the most beloved and championed premium DAC brand by their own dealers—meaning they often preferred dCS over the other premium DAC brands they also sell.

Dealers consistently state that they've never heard anything better in pursuit of sonic detail and liquidity. Meaning, smooth and grain-free sound, but without sacrificing detail.

REL
Commentary

There is no other subwoofer brand—at any price point—that's more represented among hifi dealers than REL. There is no close second.

While many hifi speaker brands make great subwoofers, subwoofers is all that REL does—giving them a product for every type of system and at every price point.

Their subs are praised by dealers as being fast enough and sufficiently distortion-free to match premium woofers found in high-end speakers.

Meanwhile, they pack a much bigger punch than most speakers' own subwoofers, improving sound systems for home theater use—in addition to their well-known ability to smooth out room bass nodes, and improve upper harmonics.

HiFi ROSE
Commentary

There is no other digital streamer brand that's more represented among hifi dealers than HiFi ROSE. Innuous and Aurender were close behind, but HiFi Rose is 2025's winner—it's what dealers most often want to sell.

Why? It's a combination of what dealers love when hearing equipment at hifi shows, then later validate in their own shop, then eventually discover that buyers too love what they're hearing at the price point.

That's the formula for a mainstay brand across dealers: undeniable price-per-performance—the gear most people actually wind up buying.

Audio Note takes the crown of best-represented tube amplifiers among hifi dealers worldwide.

They're known for lush midranges, big soundstaging, and that quintessentially musical tube sound. Many dealers and reviewers praise them as essential for a tube-based system—a must-hear complement (and counterpoint) to your other hifi systems that prioritize power and detail over musicality and realism.

Premium Speakers
Commentary

Wilson Audio is the quintessential premium American speaker brand. (They also make endgame subwoofers.)

They are—without question—the brand that hifi dealers throughout the United States most want to represent.

That's a reflection of both Wilson Audio's decades of proven stellar customer support plus their dealer-to-customer experience.

These qualities are not to be overlooked when buying premium hifi products. You need a company that'll be there to replace broken parts in five years, to facilitate trade-ins when you want to upgrade, and to help you perfect your in-home setup so that you get your money's worth.

Wilson is one of the very few companies that embraces how much more there is to the hifi experience than purely the product itself.

Mojo 2
Commentary

Chord's Mojo 2 is the device that finally got ExtremeHiFi's Cameron (AKA GoldenSound) listening to headphones and IEMs on the go without feeling like he was compromising.

A truly exceptional DAC with technologies including (1) higher performance oversampling and (2) lower jitter than even some of the most expensive desktop/rack-size DACs available—all in a device that fits in your pocket.

It sounds exceptional, and with the addition of built-in EQ to boot, this is one of the few products that we put down the money for before the demo was even finished.

Schiit
Commentary

Schiit is a brand that has been uniquely open, transparent, and communicative with their customers and the hifi community.

They frequently host meetups and livestreams to answer questions, and they post deep-dives into 'how does X work' that in some cases are so transparent that most brands would be terrified to share a quarter of what Schiit has, providing behind the scenes info about how and why they have designed their products in the ways they have.

The combination of open communication, direct engagement with the community, and at every stage going above and beyond makes them a clear choice for this award.

CEO Jason Stoddard himself is also active on forums and has for years been an open book when it comes to questions about amplifier design and audio theory in general.

Schiit has set the bar for every other brand's potential for community engagement. By our count, they've helped more newcomers fall in life with hifi than anyone else. And isn't that why we're all doing this?

Commentary

Orchard Audio's GaN FET amps sound smoother than other Class D amps. In their midrange, there's a lush liquidity that you otherwise typically only get from $30K+ amplifiers.

Top of the line models are packed with enormous wattage and capacitance figures that rival endgame amplifiers. Meaning, they're capable of powering nearly any speaker ever made.

Accordingly, there is no better bang-for-buck when accounting for power delivery plus that oft-desired midrange sweetness.

YG's speakers are the perfectionist's representation of science meets speakers. Using an unparalleled level of computer modeling to maximize phase coherence and minimize distortion, YG speakers sound fundamentally different to the competition.

There's a level of tactility in their reproduction of transients that sounds convincingly live when your eyes are closed. Perhaps most importantly, you know you're listening to YG when you listen to YG. Meaning, your dollars are truly getting you something fundamentally new.

And that's why YG wins the technological breakthrough award.

Commentary

Soulution's amplifiers—particularly this year's top of the line models—are the perfectionist's representation of science meets amplification.

Using novel bandwidth and feedback techniques aimed to minimize distortion, soulution amplifiers sound fundamentally different than anything else. The dealers we spoke to love demo'ing them to open buyers' eyes to what's newly possible in hifi.

They're a benchmark in immediacy plus tactility in transient reproduction. Plus, endgame bass. The sonic signature is such a leap forward that you know you're listening to a different level of amplifier when your eyes are closed. It means your dollars are truly getting you something new.

And that's why soulution wins the technological breakthrough award for the Premium Amplifiers category.

Benchmark's combination of a unique approach to PSU design and error-correction has yielded a product with distortion and noise so low it is hard to believe.

They also boast a design that achieves incredible performance even into demanding loads and high output requirements, all without the use of class D.

After impressing ExtremeHiFi's Cameron (AKA GoldenSound) enough not only subjectively, but also objectively, that he simply had to purchase one of his own, and with still nothing else on the market boasting the capabilities of this amplifier today — this was without any doubt this year's winner.

The unique implementation of custom silicon (ASIC) into the WADAX Studio Player has allowed WADAX to design and incorporate novel feed-forward error correction methods not found in any other digital product.

This allows for a dynamic correction of small signal imperfections that otherwise would be impossible to implement with standard FPGA technology.

The end result? A practically unheard of level of grain-free resolution—and incomparable adjustment possibilities to boot. A legitimate technical breakthrough.
